Two Forms of Conscious Sedation

York & Bay Dental offers two forms of conscious sedation (a light level of sedation during which you will still be awake enough to provide feedback on how you’re feeling):

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (a.k.a. Laughing Gas)

If you’re coming in for a cleaning, filling, injection, etc., nitrous oxide sedation might be an effective choice. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your nitrous oxide sedation appointment:

  • Do not eat or drink anything two hours prior to your appointment
  • Do not wear contact lenses or make-up
  • Do eat a light, low-fat, high-carbohydrate meal
  • Do wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Do arrive at least 10 minutes early – the process will take at least five minutes for you to breathe in 100% oxygen until you’re relaxed

Oral Sedation

Ideal for procedures that will last longer than an hour, oral sedation involves the administering of 1-2 sedative pills an hour before your procedure. During this hour, we will monitor your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.). Be advised that it’s normal to experience lingering effects of the sedative during the next 24 hours after your procedure. This is why it is necessary for you to prearrange your transportation to and from the appointment.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your oral sedation appointment with us:

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment – no driving for 24 hours after
  • Plan on arriving an hour before your procedure
  • Absolutely no sedatives (including alcohol) or stimulants (caffeine or nicotine) 12-24 hours prior
  • No possibility of pregnancy
  • Do not eat or drink anything (even water) for six hours prior to appointment (except for medications)
  • Do not wear contact lenses
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows us to easily measure your blood pressure around your bicep muscle
  • No operating hazardous devices or heavy lifting for 24 hours after
  • No stairs until you’re completely recovered
  • No important decisions (especially work-related) for 24 hours after
