Sports Mouthguards

Over the years, the staff at York & Bay Dental have fit mouth guards for the Hamilton Bulldogs, Toronto Rock, McMaster Marauders, and Hamilton Kilty B’s. We are fully equipped with an on-site lab that can make your mouth guard with a PRESSURE LAMINATION process.

There are an estimated 15 million dental injuries and 5 million cases of traumatically avulsed teeth in the U.S. each year (National Youth Sports Safety Foundation). Sports may account for up to 39% of those dental injuries.

A mouth guard not only protects your teeth, but it can also protect your brain!! Mouth guards reduce the risk of concussion by creating a pocket between the bones of the jaw joint and the base of the skull. This space helps prevent the lower jaw from slamming into the base of the skull and brain upon impact.

Three types of mouth guards exist:

TYPE I: Stock Mouth Guards

These stock mouth guards come in a few sizes and does not form to the in’s and out’s of your teeth and gums.

TYPE II: Mouth-formed Mouth Guards (aka Boil & Bite)

These ‘boil & bite’ mouth guards are only slightly better than the ‘stock’ mouth guards, since they are formed to fit your teeth. However, the HOME-fitting process makes it difficult to achieve a uniform thickness. As a result, the mouth guard ends up being thicker in the corners and thinner over the teeth. Because of this, boil & bite mouth guards provide minimal protection. The unwanted bulk and poor fit makes it more difficult to breathe and speak to other teammates.

TYPE III: Custom-fabricated Mouth Guards (Dentist Made)

These custom mouth guards are made with either a vacuum machine or a PRESSURE LAMINATION process. Most dental offices use a vacuum machine to make a single layered mouth guard. At York & Bay Dental, we have an in-office lab that is fully equipped to fabricate your mouth guard with the pressure lamination process. This technique results in a better fit to the teeth and gums, as well as unsurpassed protection and comfort.

The choice is obvious. Cost of hockey equipment is expensive. So is the cost of fixing a broken or lost tooth…or worse yet, the cost of an early retirement from sports.

You are one of a kind. Make sure your mouth guard was made to fit YOU!

Play safe.
