Hygiene Programs from Your Hamilton and Ancaster Dentists

You already know that your teeth help you chew and communicate. You also know they enhance your appearance and give you the confidence to smile and laugh. But how much thought do you give your gums?

Even though you don't spend as much time thinking about their health, your gums play just as crucial a role in your oral health and overall health as your teeth do. And just like diseased teeth, diseased gums can cause a variety of complications, from pain to bleeding to lost teeth.

Fortunately, there are many ways to prevent gum disease. Our Hamilton dentist team will educate patients on how to take care of their gums and promote oral health from birth to old age. Through our hygiene program, you'll be better informed to make positive oral health decisions for your whole life.

What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a condition that often arises from poor dental hygiene. If you don't brush and floss your teeth regularly, plaque builds up, which creates pockets of bacteria. These bacteria eventually infect your gums, causing swelling, irritation, and bleeding.

If your gum disease goes untreated, it can eventually turn into a more severe infection called periodontitis. Over time, your teeth may become loose in their sockets, you may have more bacteria and pain in your mouth, and your bone structure and jaw could weaken and shift.

In addition, gum disease is often linked with other conditions such as cardiovascular disease.

What is a Hygiene Program?
At York & Bay Dental Office, we want to help our patients develop healthy habits that lead to a lifetime of happy teeth and gums. When you brush and floss your teeth daily, visit your dentist every three to six months, and catch dental problems before they become more severe, you can lessen your chances of developing gum disease and other diseases.

If you already have gum disease or want to learn how to avoid it, contact our dentists at 905-577-0770. We'll help you cope with gum disease in Hamilton.
