Find Relief from TMJ Pains & Headaches from Your Hamilton Dentist at York & Bay Dental Office

Don’t Suffer from TMJ Headaches

If you suffer from jaw pains when chewing your food or experience tension headaches, migraines, or jaw clicking/popping, you might have a Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) if your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ) are not functioning properly. York & Bay Dental Office can diagnose and treat TMD.

Understanding Causes for TMD

Your TMJ is a complex sliding joint that operates the same as other ball-and-socket joints in your shoulders and knees. This means that if it’s not sliding properly, joint clicking will develop, your jaw may deviate to one side, or it may even lock. TMD can be caused by any of the following factors:

Symptoms of TMD can include:

Treating TMD

After your diagnosis, we will determine the best combination of treatments that will help you heal. Typically, treatment for your TMD will take 4-6 months. Our primary objective is to create an environment for your body to heal itself. Our TMD treatments may involve any of the following:

Energex

Proven to reduce joint pain in minutes, the Energex Device utilizes Pulsed Radio Frequency Energy (PRFE) to stimulate the tissues of your TMJ. Because this creates an increased blood flow to the area, it relieves your joint pain in a non-invasive manner. This device’s unique design allows for treatments to be pinpointed directly to the affected area, ensuring that the energy is not dissipated through healthy tissue.

Laser Treatment

Lasers are used to accelerate the healing of injured muscles and joints by "charging" the batteries of your cells. As a result, your body is given extra energy to recover more quickly. Ask us how you can benefit from laser therapy.

Dental Orthotics

Some TMD sufferers may require dental orthotics to be worn during the first phase of their TMD treatment. Dental orthotics are usually clear, plastic appliances made to fit your lower teeth. Acting much like foot orthotics, dental orthotics align your lower jawbone while you eat or speak, which relieves the pressure on tender jaw joints.

Over the course of 4-6 months, your body is given the opportunity to heal and your initial symptoms should gradually disappear. Once we achieve our treatment goals, we will wean you from wearing your dental orthotics. If your symptoms return, we may consider a second phase of treatment, which may also include orthodontics, porcelain crowns/onlays, or an overlay partial denture.
